Hoe Anthems

Songs that really give me an ego.

When I put together this list, there were a few post-punk/pop-punk/alternative songs that I considered. Sadly, I realized that these songs that I had very fond memories of are actually horrifically misogynist *cough-Misery-Business-cough*. I also spent a long time thinking about this specific type of misogyny, it’s roots, and what it might have been the foundation for.

Anyway, here’s a very incomplete list of hoe anthems that I enjoy.

Straight up hoe anthems:

• I Like Him by Princess Nokia

• Creep by TLC

  • I hate to tell you that I love songs that have 1) hoe energy and 2) entanglement energy. The songs above really have that.

• Backin’ It Up (feat. Cardi B) by Paridson Fontaine

• Volcano Girls by Veruca Salt

  • Strong alt girl hoe energy.

  • I want to also note the entire Jawbreaker soundtrack. Please speculate in the comments who you think I identify with most in the film.

  • Songs like this also give me big Jennifer’s Body energy for some reason and I’m into that.

• Hit the Back by King Princess

  • 10/10 recommend sending this to an ex-lover or your crush during a toxic spiral.

• Oops (Oh My) by Tweet

  • Including this because it is a forgotten bop. I have a great story about dancing to this song in a poorly lit bar two months into living in NYC.

• Hang Me Up To Dry by Cold War Kids

• Obsession by EXO

• Everything He Needs by Carly Rae Jepsen

Songs that radiate hoe energy:

• Magic Dance by David Bowie

  • Okay, hear me out on this one. It’s a great hoe anthem because it’s all about power. Who has the power? The Babe (that’s YOU). The movie wants you to think Jareth has the power but he really doesn’t. He does everything for Sarah and in the end, he’s defeated by a poem. All this really says to me is to own that power and turn it on those who want it for themselves.

  • “Let's play forever, I just wanna be your dog.” Enough said.

• How Soon is Now? by The Smiths

  • I’ve seen The Craft way too many times.

• Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer

• Paradise by BTS

  • Blood Sweat & Tears is considered the hoe anthem but there is something about the vibe of this song.
